Playground Boulders and Climbers

Origins and History
Some time ago we saw a trend developing. Climbing was becoming more mainstream. While at industry trade shows such as NRPA. Nicros began to see rock climbing products being offered as components to playground structures. We decided to take ideas to the next level.
|
We wanted a durable, easy to install, affordable product that looked great, felt like rock, climbed just like rock, and most importantly the finished product had to be FUN. At the time of the boulders concept, the majority of our walls were custom built climbing walls. Landscape architects weren’t interested in a custom boulder being added to their parks in the time it would take to build it, the mess it would create, and the time that the playground would be potentially available to park users.
With that in mind, we realized that we needed to create a product that could be pre-fabricated in our facility, loaded on a truck, and shipped to the playground where it could be easily and quickly installed. Thus came about the birth of Nicros’ playground boulders.

What is Nicros Boulders?
Nicros’ Boulders are the most realistic and fun-to-climb playground rocks available. And, they look great too! Each Boulder has been carefully crafted from molds of real rock to capture the diversity of climbing handholds that only nature can create. This also creates a playground piece that is unequaled in terms of esthetics and blending in with a natural park setting. There are three sized boulders and placing them together in some combination simply looks outstanding. Playground Boulders Nicros are comparable to Entre Prises (EP) FreeForm Boulders, Eldorado REALRock Boulders and MEGARock Boulders, and Rockwerx Sculpted Rock Boulders and Natural Rock Boulders.

What makes Nicros Boulders so great?
Kids are born climbers, and playground manufacturers have worked for years to provide an outlet for this innate need to climb. A multitude of climbing equipment has been created combining steel, wood and plastic.
While these man-made structures have addressed the physical act of climbing, they don’t have the look and feel of real rock, which is part of the “adventure” of rock-climbing.
|
Creating a climbing structure that allows kids to test their abilities, as well as get in touch with nature, is what Nicros’ Boulders are all about.
Three sizes of Boulders guarantee something for kids of all ages. The largest Boulder has a footprint of 12' x 6' and at 9' tall it yields almost 400 square feet of climbing surface.
The medium Boulder has a footprint of 12' 6" x 8' 4" and is 7' tall with a surface area of almost 300 square feet. Both the large and medium Boulder are approximately 2” thick. The small Boulder is 7' 6" x 5' x 4' tall and is perfect for the littlest climbers to scramble on.
The designers at Nicros use their more than fifty years experience in rock climbing to design a boulder that simulated the movements used while climbing real rock. We also had to keep in mind that children were going to be the ones doing these movements, so things had to be scaled to make the Boulder climbable by kids of all ages.
We spent some time secret shopping all of the competitive products on the market. From that research we determined Nicros boulders to be the only boulders that roll all of the following into one fantastic product:
1. high glass content polyester resin
2. UV resistant outer coating
3. All climbable features, no modular holds to maintain or t-nut holes in boulders to attract insects
4. Anti-graffitti coating that needs 180 degree water to remove
5. Outstanding rock-like appearance
6. Lightweight

Surface and Features
Nicros boulders look great. Since they are made from a combination of hand sculpting and pieces that are molded from real rock, the resulting boulder has a stunning appearance. These boulders are sure to draw attention to any park or playground. The features on the boulders are ergonomically designed so that they fit the natural hand position in a comfortable way – not adding undue stress to tendons or joints. Since the features on Nicros’ boulder are all radiused (rounded out from a central point on the feature), the hand remains in a relaxed, anatomical position while climbing.
Unlike competitor products which abound with crimps, sharp edges, and small incuts, the likelihood of finger muscle tear, strain, or general pain in the fingers and hands is significantly reduced.
|
 |
The features on our boulders are also designed with the end user in mind. The features are “tennis shoe friendly” so that climbers will not take an unexpected fall due to a poorly designed foot placement.
The incut features on Nicros Boulders are specifically designed to aid in the removal of water. Water will not pool in the pockets (which causes the boulder to still be wet even when the rain has stopped). Instead, it will run out of the features and help aid in the drying of the entire surface once the weather is cooperating once again.

Handholds
Nicros recommends that customers DO NOT add modular handholds to their boulder. There are several reasons for this position. Above all, it should be considered that if a boulder has handholds, there is an increased likelihood for thieves to simply remove them. |
Feel
Nicros Boulders have an aggregate filled outer coating that gives the boulder a cool, dry, rocklike feel. The texture on all of our competitor’s boulders wears down quickly after the first few children have climbed around. This causes the entire surface to feel very slick and not at all rock-like. Nicros’ texture is built to last. From our experience in texture with many of our custom-built climbing products, Nicros has perfected the technique to get the texture exactly right – so it will always feel like real rock and not wear down after the first uses like competitor products.

Construction
Nicros’ Boulders are made from fiberglass which results in a beautiful, realistic look and feel since the Boulders are molded from real rock. We chose to make our boulders out of fiberglass over concrete for durability and the ability to ship them without cracking. |
Concrete tends to crack as it is bounced around on the back of a truck and is twisted during the loading and unloading process. Unrepaired, these cracks can collect water and damage the boulder by the expansion of Freeze/thaw.
The molds for Nicros Boulders are made from the original part and sent to be fiberglassed. A special UV resistant outer coating is laid into the mold first and backed by a high glass content polyester resin. The parts are then assembled by standing them into place and fiberglassing them together from the inside, forming a super strong one-piece boulder. The seams are then filled from the outside and textured to form a seamless outer surface and the boulder is tinted using Nicros’ special tinting techniques.
The standard color scheme is a mostly brown color scheme. Since the boulders are made with fiberglass, they are already UV stable and the boulders are sprayed with a special anti-grafitti coating before they are shipped to you which makes removal of unwanted “rock paintings” easier. Each Boulder can also be individually tinted for an up-charge to meet a desired color effect.
|
Since Nicros boulders are fiberglass and are a lighter weight than competitor products, installation is easier. All Nicros’ Boulders arrive at your site complete and ready to install. Depending on the size, a fork lift or small crane will be needed to lift the boulder into place. Footings or security points can be handled a number of ways and custom options are available. |
 |
We now offer a flame retardant gel coat that can be applied to your Nicros boulder for an additional cost and lead time. The Optional flame retardant resin that Nicros uses meets Class 1 flame retardant specifications (ASTM e-84 rating of <25 flame spread, <450 smoke density).

Warranty
Nicros warranty’s its boulder for one year to be free from manufacturer defects. Fiberglass is a great material, as it will reduce warranty issues. The Boulders consist of a two part construction, the outer layer is a mostly cosmetic layer that is very thin and has very little strength on its own. The thicker high glass content polyester resin layer is the strong layer. Due to this two-part construction, a small air bubble could occur between the thin gel coat and the fiberglass. |
 |
We use a rubber mallet to try and locate these bubbles prior to shipping. We may not catch every air bubble and this air bubble can remain hidden for some time until the thin outer gelcoat breaks. This is easily repaired by a qualified technician in the field using a patch kit that can be provided by Nicros. Nicros can provide a quote for repairs to the boulders as a result of actions not covered under warranty. Items such as fire damage and blunt trauma can generally be repaired in the field and result in a very high quality finished product. |
