Yes, gas prices are at record-high levels, but don't let it stop you from going on weekend climbing trips and an extended roadtrip this season. Climbing at many different areas is the very best investment in your future climbing ability--of course it's great fun, too! Consider that every climbing area requires unique techniques and tactics, so with every send (or even failure) you will develop the skills needed to elevate your performance. It's not coincidence that the very best climbers are also some of the most well-traveled, so make a pledge to visit at least three new climbing areas this season.
Here's the biggest secret to achieving your "three new area" goal this year. Right now, you must write down the three climbing areas you want to visit this season and develop a plan of action for getting to each. What things will you need to give up in order to save the money or gain the vacation time needed? Who would be the perfect positive-energy, highly motivated partner for each trip? What other things will you need to do this week, this month, and beyond, to bring each trip to fruition?
Now, get out a calendar and set the tentative dates for your new-crag trips. You may also want to consider how you can best prepare for each trip--should you be training endurance (for a multi-pitch destination area) or anaerobic endurance and power (for a sport crag or bouldering trip)? |

No matter your travel plans, create bright, vivid mental images of the area (or a dream climb there) in the forefront of your thoughts in the days and weeks leading up to the trip. This will help you maintain the motivation to train, save, and sacrifice according to the game plan you've developed. No matter your travel plans, create bright, vivid mental images of the area
(or a dream climb there) and make them a central part of your thinking in the days and weeks leading up to the trip. This will help you maintain the motivation to train, save, and sacrifice according to the game plan you've developed.
So there you have it--you're gonna be pulling down on some great new stone this season, and you'll become a better climber in the process. Wishing you a safe and wonderful trip. Send one for me!
