Nicro Landing Mats Landing Surface

Origins and History

The use of landing surfaces came about as an evolution from the playground industry using technologies derived from the gymnastics industry.

What are Landing Mats?

Landing mats are the most popular landing surface for schools and bouldering walls. With this type of mat, when the wall is not in use, the mats simply fold up and the mats are locked down with a closure system, thereby limiting access to the wall.

Although there is no climbing industry standard that specifically dictates the thickness or dimensions of a landing surface mat, Nicros recommends the landing surface cover a minimum of eight feet from the base of the wall and that it be suitably thick to protect a climber's fall.

What makes Nicros Landing Mats so great?

Surface and Features

Nicros offers four mat systems that connect to the base of the climbing wall. All mats are made with at least a one inch polyethylene foam and the remaining thickness is an open cell polyurethane. The covering is an 18oz. vinyl and the mats are fire retardant.

Feel

The covering for school landing mats is a vinyl surface which is easy to clean. The feel of the mats depends on the thickness you choose -- the different foam layers will vary the feel.

Construction

Nicros landing mats arrive to you ready-to-install. You just need to lay them out side-by-side, velcro them together, and install latches against the bottom of your climbing wall. Not only will this prevent the mats from being kicked out away from the wall by climbers, but will also make it easy to lift the mats into place for closure.

Lifting mats into place for closure can easily be done by one person for a 20' wall. It is easier to get the whole class involved for longer walls. Children stand against the mats holding them up, while the teacher locks them down.

A cable is run through grommets on the ends of the mats. This is part of the closure system.

This cable is looped over holds which helps to hold it in place while locking it in position.

The wall is locked down on both ends to keep participants off when the wall is not being supervised.

Cost

Mat cost varies depending on length and thickness of mats. Nicros offers two standard sizes, each of which are available in two standard thicknesses.

4'x6' x 3"

4'x8' x 3"

4'x6' x 5"

4'x8' x 5"

In addition to the cost of the mats, the closure system is additional. Please call for pricing (this is partly determined by the length of your wall)
